A decision-journey map with discovery, comparison, validation and action prompts.
The biggest AEO mistake is treating AI like another ranking page. The change is happening at the buyer level. People ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Reddit, YouTube, Amazon and Google before they decide who deserves a click. Your website may be the last stop, not the first.
What changed
AEO is the work of becoming a useful, trusted source inside the answer a buyer sees before they visit your site. That means your job is not simply “optimize a page.” Your job is to understand the question, the stage of the decision, the sources the engine trusts, and what proof would make your brand safe to recommend.
Worked example: one buyer, five search places
Imagine someone needs aftershave oil for sensitive skin. They may see one brand on Amazon, watch a YouTube review, read a Reddit thread, ask ChatGPT for a shortlist, and only then visit the brand site. If the same brand appears across those moments, trust compounds. If your brand is missing from the AI shortlist, a competitor can win before your product page ever has a chance to convert.
The wrong way and the useful way
“We need to rank for AI analytics.”
This turns the work into one keyword and one page.
“Which AI answers shape the buyer’s shortlist before they visit us?”
This turns the work into prompts, sources, proof and measurement.
Mini playbook
- Ask customers what they did before buying
Look for phrases, platforms and competitor names they mention unprompted.
- Map the decision path
Discovery, comparison, validation and action. Do not skip validation; reputation questions often decide the sale.
- Turn each stage into prompts
Write full buyer questions, not keywords. “Best WordPress AI analytics plugin for ecommerce stores” beats “AI analytics.”
- Record where you show up
Cited, mentioned or absent. A brand mention is not the same as a citation.
What if I sell locally?
Add location, service area, urgency and trust questions. A local buyer asks “who near me can handle this,” “how much will it cost,” and “can I trust them,” not just the service name.
What if my buyers are technical?
Track compatibility, implementation, limits, security and migration prompts. Technical buyers often ask AI to remove bad-fit options before they ever book a demo.
Run the buyer questions in Visibility
CiteTrack turns the journey into tracked prompts so you can see whether AI cites you, merely mentions you, recommends a competitor or relies on an outside source.
