How to Get Cited by Claude in 2026

Quick answer: Claude can search the web and cite sources, and it favors clear, authoritative, well-structured pages. Here is how Claude finds and cites sources, what to change, and how to track whether you show up.

⚡ Key takeaways

  • → Claude is Anthropic's AI assistant, used heavily by professionals, researchers, and developers. Its user base is smaller than ChatGPT's but skews high-intent, which makes Claude citations valuable in technical and B2B categories.
  • → Claude's default surface (claude.ai without browsing enabled) answers from its training data. With browsing enabled (via integrations or tool use), Claude does live web retrieval and cites sources. Different optimization tactics apply to each path.
  • → Adding statistics, citations, and direct quotations to your content lifts AI citation visibility 30 to 40%. Per Princeton's GEO study (Aggarwal et al., ACM KDD 2024), tested against a 10,000-query benchmark.
  • → Claude referrals convert at moderate rates. Seer Interactive's analysis of a single B2B client found Claude visitors converted at 5% versus 1.76% for Google Organic. Smaller absolute volume than ChatGPT, but disproportionately useful in technical verticals.
  • → GA4 now has a native AI Assistant channel that includes claude.ai traffic as of May 13, 2026. Implement it to separate Claude referrals from generic traffic.
To get cited by Claude, get indexed and ranking on Brave Search, the engine behind Claude's web search, allow Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User, lead with a short verifiable answer backed by dated facts and primary sources, then track which questions you win. Claude has a reputation. The hardest AI to get cited by. The stingy one.Our test says otherwise.We ran 101 buyer questions through Claude with web search on. It cited a source every single time, 100%, and leaned on 10.7 sources per answer. That is more than ChatGPT or Perplexity used. The full numbers are in our 101-question citation benchmark.So where does the stingy reputation come from? Two things. And they change the whole playbook.

How Claude actually decides what to cite

Here is the first thing. Claude searches the web less often than its rivals.One analysis put it at about 37% of prompts, against roughly 90% for ChatGPT. So a lot of the time, Claude answers from memory and cites nothing.But the prompts that do trigger a search are the ones you care about. A "best tools" question set off a search about 81% of the time. Comparison and "near me" questions, often too. So for real buyer questions, Claude usually goes looking.Here is the second thing, and it is the big one. Claude's web search runs on Brave.Not Google. Not Bing. When Anthropic launched web search, TechCrunch confirmed it through Anthropic's own subprocessor list, Brave Search powers the retrieval layer. This matters more than any writing tip in this guide.Claude does not build its own ranking. It largely takes Brave's top results as they are. The analytics firm Profound found that Claude's cited results match Brave's top organic listings about 87% of the time, and overlap ChatGPT's results only around 20%.Read that again. Your Google ranking does not get you cited by Claude. Your Brave ranking does. The pages winning on ChatGPT mostly are not the ones winning here.And when Claude does cite, our test shows it casts a wide net, 10.7 sources on average, but a careful one. It leans toward pages it can verify.Every engine reads a different index, which is the real reason a page wins on one and loses on another.

What each engine does differently

EngineWhere it searchesSources per answerCrawlers to allow
ClaudeBrave's index10.7Claude-SearchBot, Claude-User
ChatGPTBing's index5.6OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User
PerplexityIts own index8.8PerplexityBot, Perplexity-User
GeminiGoogle's index14.3Googlebot, Google-Extended

Sources per answer are from our 101-question benchmark, June 2026. Copilot runs on Bing's index too, but was not part of the four-engine test.

Get into Brave, because that is Claude's index

This is the step almost everyone skips. It is also the one that moves the needle most for Claude.
  1. Submit your site to Brave through its webmaster tools. It takes about five minutes, and most teams never do it.
  2. Track your Brave rank for your buyer questions, not just your Google rank. Claude does not re-rank, so your Brave position is a close proxy for your citation odds.
  3. Keep the on-page basics tight, clear titles, real structure, recent dates. The same signals that lift you on Brave are the ones Claude rewards.
One honest caveat. Brave's index is smaller than Google's, so it can lag on fresh pages, and a page that dominates Google may not be in Brave yet. That gap is exactly why a strong Google site can still be invisible to Claude.

Let the right Claude crawlers reach you

Anthropic runs three crawlers. They each do a different job, and blocking the wrong one quietly costs you.

Anthropic's three crawlers, and the two you must allow to be cited

ClaudeBot is for training only. Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User should be allowed for your pages to be eligible for Claude citations.

CrawlerWhat it doesPurposeAllow it to be cited?
ClaudeBotCrawls the open web to train Anthropic's models.Model trainingOptional, training only
Claude-SearchBotIndexes pages to improve Claude's search results.Search index✓Allow
Claude-UserFetches a page live when a Claude user's question needs it.Live answer✓Allow

Allow Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User in robots.txt to stay eligible. ClaudeBot is a separate, training-only choice. All three honor robots.txt, including Claude-User, which is stricter than ChatGPT's user fetcher.

Two of them decide whether you can be cited.
  1. Claude-SearchBot indexes your pages for Claude's search.
  2. Claude-User fetches a page live when someone's question needs it.
Let both through in your robots.txt.ClaudeBot only feeds model training, so blocking it is a separate call that will not cost you a citation.

The robots.txt that keeps Claude eligible to cite you

robots.txt
# Let Claude find and cite you
User-agent: Claude-SearchBot
Allow: /

User-agent: Claude-User
Allow: /

# Model training, your call (allowed here)
User-agent: ClaudeBot
Allow: /

Allowing Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User keeps you eligible for citations. The old Claude-Web and Anthropic-AI names are retired, so you can drop them. Anthropic's crawler docs spell out each bot.

One stray Disallow line is a common reason a site drops out of AI answers without anyone noticing. So check it. CiteTrack's crawler analytics show which Claude bots actually reached you, real or faked, through reverse DNS.

Lead with an answer Claude can verify

Claude is careful. It would rather check a claim than repeat one it cannot stand behind.So write for that.
  1. Put a short answer under a heading that matches the question.
  2. Make it checkable, a real number, a date, a primary source sitting right next to it.
  3. Keep it self-contained, so a single passage stands on its own.
Example. Under the heading "How much does AI visibility tracking cost in 2026?", a verifiable answer reads, "As of 2026, hosted tools run about $50 to $500 a month. WordPress plugins are a flat $59 to $249 a year instead, billed once, and crawl logging is free." It carries dated numbers and a clear range, so Claude can check it and lift it whole.
A page Claude can verify in seconds is a page it will quote. A vague claim with nothing behind it is one it skips.

Make every claim easy to check

This is where Claude differs from the rest. It rewards pages it can trust on sight.So give it reasons to.
  • Put a real name on the page. A named author with a bio beats an anonymous post.
  • Date your facts, and link the primary source, the study, the filing, the original data, not a page that links to a page.
  • Back a key claim with more than one source, since source diversity reads as credibility.
  • Keep the tone level. Claude leans away from hype and toward balanced, careful language.
Swap the soft line for the hard one. "Fast setup" gives Claude nothing. "Installs in under five minutes" gives it a fact to lift and attribute.
Example. A claim Claude cannot check, "AI search is growing fast." A claim it can, "AI search sent 9% of our organic traffic in May 2026, up from 3% in January, measured in our own analytics." The second names a number, a date, and where it came from, so Claude can verify it and quote it.

Earn trust on the sources Claude reads

Some of Claude's confidence in a brand was set long before you showed up, by the publications it trained on.So a mention in a place Claude already respects carries weight. A profile on G2 or Capterra. A real answer in a relevant Reddit thread. A spot in an established roundup. Each one is outside proof Claude can lean on, the kind of off-site trust GEO is built on.
Example. A weak signal, a one-line G2 entry with no detail. A strong one, a G2 profile with dated reviews, a full feature list, and a named team, plus an honest Reddit answer that walks through real results. Claude leans on the version it can corroborate across more than one source.

Add schema and keep the page current

Two smaller moves help.First, schema. Mark up the page with Article, FAQ, and Organization data so machines read your point and your identity cleanly. The FAQ block is the easy win, since it maps your visible question and answer to a format Claude parses without guessing.

A small FAQ schema block, mapped to your visible answer

faq-schema.html
<!-- Mirror the visible Q&A on the page -->
<script type="application/ld+json">
{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "FAQPage",
  "mainEntity": [{
    "@type": "Question",
    "name": "Does Claude use real-time web search?",
    "acceptedAnswer": {
      "@type": "Answer",
      "text": "Yes, when web search is on. Claude searches Brave and cites the sources it used."
    }
  }]
}
</script>

Add it in the page head or through your SEO plugin. Keep the schema text matching the answer a reader sees, since markup that disagrees with the page hurts more than it helps.

Second, freshness. Update the facts and change the date when the content really changes. Brave leans on freshness, and so does Claude, so a current page has a real edge over a stale one.
Example. A real refresh reads, "Updated June 2026, refreshed the 2026 pricing and re-ran the numbers." A stale page wears a two-year-old date and the same figures, and on a freshness-led index like Brave, that page quietly loses to a current one.

Check whether Claude is actually citing you

You will not see any of this in Google Analytics.Claude's answers about you happen off your site, and the visits rarely carry a normal referrer. So the only honest way to know is to ask the engines your questions on a schedule, then record what comes back.

Cited, mentioned, or absent, the three results CiteTrack records

CitedYour page is linked as a source in the answer. The win, you earn the visibility and the click.
MentionedYour brand is named in the text, but not linked. Visible, but no click yet.
AbsentNeither linked nor named. A competitor took the answer for this question.
On WordPress, CiteTrack runs that loop for you. It puts your real buyer questions to Claude, plus ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Copilot, on a set cadence, then marks each result cited, mentioned, or absent, with the exact sources behind every answer.

Measure it in CiteTrack, cited, mentioned or absent per engine, with position and share of voice.
The crawl logging is free the moment you switch it on. So you can watch which AI bots hit your site before you pay for a thing.When a page gets crawled but never quoted, the Optimize panel scores its Citability and points straight at the gap, a missing answer, weak schema, a thin section.
CiteTrack Optimize screen scoring a page's Citability with one-click fixes for each failing check
CiteTrack's Optimize module scores each page's Citability and offers one-click fixes for the pages Claude crawls but never cites.
Two honest limits. It is a WordPress plugin, so a site built on something else is out of luck. And you bring your own API keys, so you pay the engines directly, at cost with no markup, and manage that spend.

A weekly routine that keeps you cited

You do not need a big program. A short loop, run once a week, does the work.
  1. Pick ten questions your buyers really ask.
  2. Run them through Claude with web search on. Note where you land, cited, mentioned, or gone.
  3. Check your Brave rank for the ones you lost, since that is what Claude reads.
  4. Fix the most valuable missing page, a verifiable answer, named author, dated sources, then confirm Claude can reach it.
  5. Re-check next week, then move down the list.
Give it a month and you will see the trend, not just a snapshot.

Where to start

None of this is a trick.Claude reads Brave, cites pages it can verify, and casts a wide net once it does. So the path is clear.Get into Brave. Pick your ten questions. See where you stand today. Then fix the one page closest to the line.What would change for you if Claude started naming you for even three of those ten questions?

In Brave's index. Your page is submitted to Brave and ranks for the questions you want, since Claude reads Brave./2
Crawlers allowed. Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User are not blocked in robots.txt for the pages you want cited./2
Verifiable answer. A short, self-contained answer with a real number, a date, or a primary source sits under the question./2
Genuine authority. A named author, primary sources, and more than one source back the key claims./2
Fresh and structured. A recent date, clean headings, and schema so a single passage lifts cleanly./2
Confirmed. You track whether Claude actually cites you on your real prompts in CiteTrack./2

Score it. 10 to 12 you're well placed; 6 to 9 close the unticked rows; under 6 start with Brave indexing and a verifiable answer, nothing else matters until Claude can reach and trust you.

Questions people ask about Claude citations

Does Claude search the web, or just use training data?Both, depending on the question. By default Claude often answers from memory and cites nothing. With web search on, it looks things up live and cites the sources it used. The buyer questions you care about, the "best X" and comparison ones, are the ones most likely to trigger a search.
Is Claude really powered by Brave Search?Yes. When Anthropic launched web search for Claude, it added Brave Search to its official subprocessor list, and independent analyses found Claude's cited results closely match Brave's top organic listings. In practice, Claude reads Brave's index rather than running its own crawler.
Why don't my Google or Bing rankings get me cited by Claude?Different index. Claude reads Brave, and Brave's results overlap ChatGPT's by only about 20%. A page that ranks first on Google can be missing from Brave entirely, so your Brave position is the one that decides whether Claude can cite you.
Which Claude crawler do I have to allow to get cited?Two of them, Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User. ClaudeBot is training only, so it does not affect citations. All three respect robots.txt, so a clean allow rule is all it takes.
How many sources does Claude cite in an answer?About 10.7 in our 101-question test, more than ChatGPT or Perplexity. Claude is not stingy with citations once it searches, it casts a wide net, but a careful one that favors pages it can verify.
