AI citation

When an AI answer links your URL as one of its sources.

Also called: LLM citation, generative AI citation, AI source link

What is AI citation?

Direct answer

When an AI answer links your URL as one of its sources.

An AI citation is when an answer engine includes your URL in the sources behind its answer, the AI-era equivalent of a ranking, except there is usually only room for a handful. A citation carries a clickable link and the implicit endorsement of being chosen as a source.

It is distinct from a mere mention (your brand named in the prose, unlinked) and from being absent, see cited vs mentioned. Tracking citations per prompt and per engine, over time, is the core of citation tracking.

Why — and when — does it matter?

A citation is evidence that an engine selected a URL as a source. It is stronger than a mention, but its value still depends on the supported claim, placement, accuracy and audience intent.

How it works

1

Run a defined user prompt on a named engine.

2

Capture the answer and every source URL.

3

Normalize domains and URLs.

4

Match your domain and competitors.

5

Store position, passage, sentiment and timestamp.

Worked example

Situation → interpretation → action

Perplexity cites a retailer’s sizing guide for “how should trail shoes fit?” The brand is not recommended as a seller, but it owns the informational source position—a useful citation with a different commercial value.

How to track and report it

PrimaryCitation rate
SecondaryCitation position, cited page, source share and referral outcomes
FormulaCitation rate = cited checks ÷ eligible answer checks × 100

Reporting rule: State the engine, prompt set, market, time window and denominator. A number without scope cannot be reproduced or compared.

Practical playbook

  1. Run a defined user prompt on a named engine.
  2. Capture the answer and every source URL.
  3. Normalize domains and URLs.
  4. Match your domain and competitors.
  5. Store position, passage, sentiment and timestamp.

Common mistakes

  • Counting unlinked mentions as citations
  • Ignoring which URL was cited
  • Comparing rates from different prompt samples
