What is Grounding?
Tying an AI answer to real, citable sources to reduce errors.
Grounding is the practice of anchoring a generated answer in retrieved, verifiable sources rather than the model’s parametric memory. A grounded answer can show its citations; an ungrounded one is more prone to hallucination.
Grounding is why clear, factual, well-attributed pages get cited: they are easy for an engine to lean on and link. It is also why monitoring what AI says about you matters, when an answer is poorly grounded, it may state something false about your brand, which CiteTrack’s answer monitor can catch.
Why — and when — does it matter?
Grounding makes an answer auditable and reduces unsupported claims by tying statements to evidence available at answer time.
How it works
Identify claims that require evidence.
Retrieve authoritative, current passages.
Constrain generation to the supplied context.
Attach each material claim to its source.
Evaluate whether the citation actually supports the claim.
Worked example
An AI states a product’s current price and links the live pricing page. A citation to an unrelated homepage would look grounded but fail claim-level verification.
How to track and report it
Reporting rule: State the engine, prompt set, market, time window and denominator. A number without scope cannot be reproduced or compared.
Practical playbook
- Identify claims that require evidence.
- Retrieve authoritative, current passages.
- Constrain generation to the supplied context.
- Attach each material claim to its source.
- Evaluate whether the citation actually supports the claim.
Common mistakes
- Equating any citation with support
- Using outdated evidence
- Checking factuality without checking attribution
Questions people ask
What is Grounding?
Tying an AI answer to real, citable sources to reduce errors. Grounding makes an answer auditable and reduces unsupported claims by tying statements to evidence available at answer time.
How does Grounding work?
Identify claims that require evidence. Retrieve authoritative, current passages. Constrain generation to the supplied context. Attach each material claim to its source. Evaluate whether the citation actually supports the claim.
How do you measure Grounding?
Supported-claim rate. Citation correctness, completeness and freshness. Groundedness = supported material claims ÷ material claims checked × 100
What is a common mistake with Grounding?
Equating any citation with support. The scope and methodology should be stated before interpreting the result.
